Coir Coir Board to aid Pollachi facilities L.N. Revathy
COIMBATORE, Oct. 25 DESPITE being identified a coir town, the development of the coir industry in Pollachi had not progressed beyond fibre extraction, manufacture of curled rope and yarn until now. Industry sources are confident that Pollachi would get a face-lift with the extension of technological support by the Coir Board. Pollachi has been identified as one among the six places in India for cluster development in coir under the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) project. The Coir Board is planning to put into operation new concepts in value addition at the Preshitha Service Society in Pollachi on Thursday. The Regional Officer of Coir Board, Mr M. Kumararaja, told Business Line that the Board would provide the equipment and latest technologies. These facilities, he said, were proposed to be extended through NGOs. The Coir Board would be extending similar support to the coir industries and cooperative societies in Thanjavur cluster too, he added. This sector has in recent months been witnessing an acute short supply of the raw material, because of drought and the set back in coconut plantations. The fibre rates had shot up by Rs 2 to Rs 3 a kilo, and the husk utilisation levels had plunged to 45 per cent, Mr Kumararaja said.
