Rubber More co-ops begin exporting rubber Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Oct. 25 MORE and more rubber co-operatives are joining entrenched players in the export field as advance orders pour in from overseas buyers and surplus stocks available in the domestic market get depleted. A spokesman of the Rubber Board said natural rubber exports from the country was expected to exceed 50,000 tonnes this year against a target of 33,000 tonnes. Exports had touched 23,000 tonnes during the first half of the fiscal year itself. The fact that this was achieved during the lean season for rubber production is sufficient reason for anticipating a higher export realisation for the second half, according to the board official. Some of the major cooperatives in the rubber sector such as the Kerala State Cooperative Rubber Marketing Federation (Rubbermark), the Kerala State Rubber Cooperative Ltd (Rubco) and the Palai Marketing Cooperative Society have been exporting sizeable quantities of natural rubber. The companies launched by the Rubber Board itself are also determined to play an enhanced role in the exports. They have been steadily accepting export enquiries and orders. According to the spokesman, Manimalayar Rubbers, based in Kottayam, has already exported 100 tonnes to Bangladesh and is currently processing an order for another 200 tonnes. Representatives of the Rubber Board, who attended a South African trade fair in Johannesburg recently, had to deal with at least a dozen export orders. The Export Promotion Cell of the board processes export enquiries and coordinates exports from the State. As natural rubber from India becomes more and more popular in the international market, significant quantities will come to be exported from the country. This, coupled with the expected decline in production due to shortfall in monsoon showers, is expected to influence the supply position. This, in turn, was expected to naturally lead to improvement in prices in the domestic market, too, the spokesman added.
