Visakha dairy to reach more areas in East Godavari

KAKINADA, Oct. 24

THE Visakha co-operative dairy is making inroads into East Godavari district also as the Godavari co-operative dairy has become sick, Mr A. Tulasi Rao, Chairman, has said.

It was consolidating its position as the largest co-operative dairy in the State in spite of stiff competition from private dairies, he added.

Visakha, with a turnover of Rs 150 crore, is the No. 1 dairy in the north-coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. He told a group of visiting pressmen from Kakinada recently in the Visakhapatnam plant that with the commissioning of Yanam-Edurlanka bridge recently, the Konaseema area could be easily accessed from Kakinada and the dairy would open more milk procurement centres in the area.

He said more chilling centres would be set up in East Godavari district and Visakha would make all efforts to keep private dairies at bay by building up the co-operative spirit among dairy farmers.

He said the dairy had already lent Rs 1 crore to the Godavari dairy to clear the dues to farmers, and the State Government would have to take a decision on handing over the Godavari dairy to Visakha after implementing the VRS scheme for the workers.

"At present, Visakha is procuring 3 lakh litres of milk from the four districts and one-third of it is being converted into milk powder. Milk procurement would increase substantially as we access more areas in East Godavari," Mr Tulasi Rao said.

He said Visakha had set up a feed-mixing plant at Srikakulam and was supplying feed to the dairy farmers at heavily subsidised rates and was also taking up works under the Janmabhoomi scheme, such as building of bridges and culverts in villages to facilitate transport.

He said the dairy was planning to add fruit milkshake to its product range, in collaboration with a German company, for which marketing would start from next year.
