Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: Rice procurement target in Andhra Pardesh during the current kharif season has been downsized to 35 lakh tonnes (l.t.) from 45 l.t. because of the shortfall in paddy production in the State on account of prevailing drought conditions.

According to the State Civil Supplies Minister, Mr C. Muthyam Reddy, paddy production is now estimated to be 48 to 50 l.t. as against the projected 67 to 68 l.t. The Food Corporation of India and the State Civil Supplies Corporation will commence procurement of paddy from November 1. He told newspersons that the State Government would represent to the Centre that the payment of an additional Rs 20 per quintal of paddy for farmers in drought affected areas should be continued till March, next year and should not be stopped by December, this year.
