Plantations Kerala Govt announces relief package for plantation labour Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Oct. 21 THE Kerala Government has announced a package of relief measures for plantation labourers who are faced with acute poverty in the wake of simmering crisis in most of the estates in the State. The package was decided at a high-level meeting called by the Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony. As per the package, 10 kg of free rice would be distributed to each labour family attached to the 24 closed estates for a period of two weeks. Urgent medical consultations for affected family members are sought to being arranged through special medical camps to be organised in estates. Similarly, separate schemes are being worked out to ensure that adequate educational facilities are made available to the affected children. The Chief Minister said that schemes under food-for-work programme would be taken up in the affected areas with a view to generating employment opportunities. The Labour Secretary has been entrusted with the task of making detailed recommendations on a workable solution to the problem.
