Society & Development Corporates have a duty to society: Sudha Murty Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Oct. 18 THE Chairperson of Infosys Foundation, Ms Sudha Murty, has urged corporates to discharge their social responsibilities, besides focussing on generating higher revenue and recording increased profits. Speaking on `social responsibility' at a function organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (Eastern Region), she said "corporates must distribute among the people the wealth they facilitate in creating.'' Helping people is an essential component of a company's functioning, just as it focuses on higher sales, human resources development etc. However, there is no algorithm in distributing it among the right people. A method of trial and error based on stated ``principles of philanthropy'' must be followed. These principles include helping a person to stand on his own and not in a manner that makes him dependent on the donor. ``Besides, never give anything 100-per cent free, never get into political and religious controversies, don't do cheque book charity and know your limitations''. She stressed the need for corporates to provide assistance to Governments in the area of healthcare. ``Don't expect the Government to provide everything. It is our State, the people are ours and so I expect the corporate sector to chip in'', she said, adding that the ``Government hospitals is where we wish to work because that is where the poor go''. Infosys Foundation is focussed on just two areas — healthcare and primary education. ``My advice to corporates is to focus on not more than two areas or issues. However, while philanthropy is okay, periodic checks are necessary not to just find out where you have gone wrong in your assessment, but also to know whether the purpose for which you have rendered help has been achieved''.
