Ashok Leyland units to be 100% reliant on wind energy

M. Ramesh

CHENNAI, Oct. 18

ASHOK Leyland Ltd proposes to make its Ennore, Hosur and Bhandara units "100 per cent wind energy-reliant"; it is learnt from the company's publicity literature.

When contacted, a senior official of Ashok Leyland said that the company proposed to lease windmills owned by other companies. Ashok Leyland has an understanding with its associate company, Ashok Leyland Finance Ltd (ALF), for this. (ALF owns 59 windmills and plans to install five more in a couple of months.) Ashok Leyland is also in talks with a few other companies for tying up a similar arrangement.

Ashok Leyland's annual report for 2001-02 says that the company spent Rs 39.76 crore on `power and fuel', as against Rs 40.55 crore in the previous year. Elsewhere in the literature, it is mentioned that over the past two years, "there has been a 20 per cent reduction in energy consumption across all the units of Ashok Leyland".

It is also understood from the Ashok Leyland official, that another associate company, Ennore Foundries Ltd - a power- intensive company - also proposes to get into similar arrangements.

While Ennore Foundries Ltd may not get all of its power from windmills, the various units of Ashok Leyland could do that, official sources said. Ashok Leyland does not see itself as a power-intensive company - its Rs 40-odd crore spend on `power and fuel' is but a small fraction of the total manufacturing expenses, which was Rs 2,338 crore last year.

Sources pointed out that what brought the `100 per cent wind energy reliance' within the reach of the company, was the adoption of energy conservation measures.

"Improvement in machine tools, furnace loading pattern, design of heating elements and an energy efficient lighting system have all led to energy saving of 30,782 units per day," says the company, in its Web site.
