CHENNAI, Oct. 13

THE Alliance Company, a Chennai-based publisher, will celebrate its centenary year of publication with a release of a plethora of books, according to Mr V. Srinivasan, Partner in the publishing company.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Srinivasan said the Alliance Company founded in 1901 by V. Kuppuswamy Iyer, was a pioneering effort of that time and had contributed significantly to popularising the concept of short stories in Tamil.

It brought out three compilations of short stories - - 25 stories written by 25 authors, 50 stories by 50 authors and 75 stories by 75 authors. It has published more than 15,000 titles in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu.

The company has been responsible for publishing in Tamil the biographies of many freedom fighters, tracing the political history and the independence struggle and translating the works of eminent writers and freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose, Romain Rolland and Sarat Chandra.

At the centenary celebrations, the books to be released include those by eminent authors and a 15-volume collection each of which will provide 100 pieces of information on a particular subject including architectural marvels and amazing features in India, notorious dictators, famous speeches, amazing facts and Tamil authors. The event will also commemorate the important personalities who had supported the company. For instance, Rajaji's offer to let Alliance publish some of his writings in 1933 was an important turning point, Mr Srinivasan said.

Between 1949 and 1970 the company focussed on publishing textbooks. It again widened its scope, and the company plans to continue with the work along the lines pioneered by its founder. It will continue to bring out high quality works and educational books. Carrying forward the initiative of its founder, the company plans to bring out a collection of 100 short stories written by 100 authors, he said.
