Boat operators accuse exporters of manipulation

Our Bureau

KOCHI, Oct. 13

THE Kerala State Fishing Boat Operators Association has demanded that seafood exporters should make clear their stand on the issue of buying prawns in the wake of the controversy over the rejection of consignments of prawns exported to European countries.

A statement said that the decision of the seafood exporters - to not purchase prawns which lacks proper certificate of antibiotic use - was to lower the price of prawns during the months of October, November and December.

There is better availability of prawns during these months and the exporters want to make huge profits from the market in the Christmas season under the cover of treatment certificate issue, it added.

The rejection of export consignment recently was a result of mixing the imported fish from other States with the catch from the Kerala coast to make huge profits, the statement said.
