Indigo all set to hit the road

Sudha Menon

PUNE, Oct. 9

MOVE over Esteem, Ikon, Accent, the colour of the season is Indigo. And if sources in the company are to be believed, the Indica sibling is geared to turn topsy turvy all the rules of the game in its segment with an ex-factory price that will be significantly lower than its contemporaries. "An irresistible price tag and top-notch quality are the USPs that the Indigo will offer car buyers," sources told Business Line.

Sources said the company had commenced commercial production of the sedan and at least 100 spanking new cars had rolled out of the plant, ready to be unveiled by Mr Ratan Tata in the last week of October. Top company sources told Business Line the Indigo would be unveiled tentatively on October 25 by Tata at a high-profile event in one of Mumbai city's oldest clubs, well in time for some festive shopping by car lovers. Indications are that this time over, it is going to be well worth the wait. Company sources insist that the car will sport an attractive price of just under Rs 5 lakh ex-factory, making it the cheapest buy in its segment. A company spokesperson, however, declined to comment when contacted by this newspaper.

According to information available with this newspaper, the Indigo will roll into dealer showrooms before October 20, following which Mr Tata will announce the national launch and pricing of the car. Deliveries are expected on a `first-come- first-serve' basis in the first week of November.

Sources told Business Line the Indigo would roll out simultaneously in petrol and a turbo-charged diesel version in manual steering, power steering and deluxe models which will have features such as power windows and power steering and a few other add-ons. The car will roll out in six colours simultaneously - - black, white and silver and three others which are being kept tightly under wraps.
