Aravindan

KOTTAYAM, Oct. 8

INTER-CROPPING in coconut groves will improve productivity, according to a research finding.

The results showed the benefits of inter-cropping to the farmers who suffer very much due to the fall in prices.Among the different cropping systems experimented, coconut plus yam was found to be very superior compared to any other crop.

The researchers behind this finding are Mr P.S. Surendira Kumar, Mr D. Kalyanasundaram, Ms S. Kavitha and Mr G. Sampath Kumar of the Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University.

The combination of yam and coconut recorded yield of 16,625 nuts per hectare per year and yam yield of 11,033 kg per hectare.

The net profit recorded was Rs 29,687 due to low input application for yam.

The coconut and banana inter-cropping system recorded yield of 16,100 nuts per hectare.

Inter-cropping has been found to be one of the agronomic strategies for effective utilisation of resources. It also leads to higher farm productivity.
