Good response at Sharjah Food Fair

ABU DHABI, Oct. 7

INDIAN companies that participated in the recently concluded Food Fair 2002 in Sharjah have initiated several business deals that could see the launch of more Indian food products in the UAE market.

Mr Saleem Sheikh, Project and Senior Sales Manager at the Sharjah Expo, which organised the fair, told Business Line on Monday that some Indian firms have signed contracts to market their products in the UAE, while others are in serious negotiations to export produce, particularly items as marine products and agro-based food items.

A number of firms under both MPEDA and APEDA umbrella participated in the fair. ``The Indian delegation was happy with the response and they are planning to double their participation at the next fair, scheduled for 2004,'' he said. Overall, the fair this year witnessed a turnout of 2,000 trade visitors and 35,000 visitors to the retail section, he said.

Meanwhile, Dr H.P. Singh, Chairman of the Coconut Development Board and Horticulture Commissioner of the Union Government said a strong push was being made to export coconuts and coconut-based products in the global markets, including the Gulf and West Asia. ``Our participation in the fair was aimed at educating consumers here about the different varieties of coconut-based products and also to clear misconceptions that coconuts are not good for health,'' he said. Coconut fibre has anti-viral properties and can be beneficial if regularly consumed, he pointed out.

He said the board had received serious enquiries and is in the process of launching its Cocojal, or tender coconut water product in the UAE market. ``This product is the result of technology devised by the board that has enabled the natural tender coconut water to have a shelf life of six months. It was launched in India two years back and it has been received very well.'' The project was given to two promoters who are producing Cocojal at units in Muddur near Bangalore. The board is also looking to promote exports of other coconut-based products, with the focus on non-oil based products, he said. Serious enquiries have been received from many overseas markets including the Gulf, Iraq and the US, he said.
