Coir Coir Board plans buyer-seller meets Aravindan
KOTTAYAM, Oct. 7 IN the emerging context of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, the role of Coir Board is being redefined - it is being called upon to take up the role of a provider and regulator. In the new set up, Coir Board is reformulating its functions instead of directly involving in marketing operations. The Board will extend all support to the actual producers to promote the product and identify suitable markets. The board recently organised a buyer-seller meet in New Delhi where it got a good response from the manufacturers in the small-scale sector. After this success, it intends to organise similar meets at different parts of the country. Besides providing the much-needed exposure to the business concerns, the meet proved to be helpful to the small-scale manufacturers in identifying potential buyers. A number of small-scale producers are heavily depending on middlemen to find outlets for their produce in the domestic market. In the process, they are able to realise very low prices while the workers don't get remunerative wages. Coir Board could provide organised sales outlets to alleviate the difficulties of the small producers. However, more has to be done to address the various issues being confronted by the industry. The industry is dominated today by an unorganised sector especially in fibre extraction, spinning and to some extent in manufacturing also. Disintegration of organised production started soon after the country became independent. Most of the organised units engaged in production disintegrated into thousands of cottage units. The fragmented nature of production structure necessitated a vast network of middlemen in the raw material and product markets.
