Plea to ban mechanised fishing

Our Bureau

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Minister for Ports and Fisheries, Mr Vasanth Salian, has urged the Centre to formulate a policy banning mechanised fishing in the sea during the breeding season between June and August.

Such a policy should be formulated with the concurrence of seven coastal States to prevent fish famine, he said in Mangalore recently. The Fisheries Department would be organising a seminar on fish famine in coastal districts and a policy banning mechanised fishing was the answer to the problem, he said.
