Letters `Putting money in neoteny'
With reference to the offhand column "Put your money in Neoteny" (Business Line, September 30), since the dawn of the industrial revolution, the West has been taking the rest of the world on a collective ride. They have successfully exterminated the noble Red Indian race, impoverished the Latin American and the African continents and given the rest of the world the gifts of racial discrimination, stress, competition, pollution and global warming to name a few. And now they promise more in neoteny. Every, so called revolution originating in the West, has backfired about 50 years hence, fertilisers and pesticides being prime examples. The cycle time is coming down with each passing day. The horror of animal testing has now extended to humans. Organ transplants, genetic engineering and stem cell research are fraught with dangers of truly Frankensteinian proportions. I shudder to think of the day when the West thinks up some ingenious scheme, where, in essence, human are grown for harvest of organs. Distressing is the lettersmalady of apathy, indifference and diffidence that afflicts the brilliant Indian mind, which Mr Raghavan has emphatically pointed out. The ageless wisdom for successful life, from the Bhagavad-Gita, Atma Bodha and Thirukkural has no value in today's business curriculum. Even Partha, the condensed wisdom of Marwari business principles, finds no serious study by the leading B-Schools. I believe that the fundamental cause of this malady is that the Indian race has become dependant. For any lasting progress to be made, the intellectual class has to come out of the "Escape from India through IIT and IIMs" syndrome and start believing in its own timeless principles of caring and sharing.
