TN CM asks Centre to hike bonus on paddy

CHENNAI, Oct 1

THE Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, has asked the Prime Minister to hike the bonus announced on paddy and also come out with a suitable relief package for farmers in the context of widespread drought in the country.

According to an official press release, the Chief Minister has written to the Prime Minister urging that the Rs 20 per quintal increase in the minimum support price of paddy to be procured during the coming season may be enhanced to Rs 40 over the last year's minimum support price.

The State Government has been giving a bonus of Rs 40 per quintal over the minimum support price announced by the Centre.

However, during the current season the State is changing over to the decentralised procurement scheme under which it will follow the Centre's guidelines.

A proper package of relief for farmers is an absolute must, she said.

The recommendations of the Commission on Agriculture Costs and Prices including roll back of fertiliser prices to pre-Budget levels and complete interest waiver on all farm loans for a one-year period merit serious consideration, according to Ms Jayalalithaa.
