No bacteria found in seafood shipment to Norway: HLL

Our Bureau

Since 2000 until August 2002, HLL made shipments of 136 containers to the EU. Except these 5 containers (four others for technical reasons), all others have been cleared through the European ports.

MUMBAI, Sept. 25

TESTS conducted on a seafood container rejected by Norway for the alleged presence of Vibreo Cholerae bacteria, have been found negative, according to Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL).

Five different agencies had conducted these tests after the consignment was brought back to the country and had found no presence of the bacteria, the company said.

It added that shipments with the same codes of production, as this container, were received by various other buyers in the EU and accepted.

However, Spain had rejected four containers for technical reasons. These had been subsequently corrected, HLL said.

Since 2000 until August 2002, HLL has made shipments of 136 containers to the EU. Except these 5 containers (as mentioned, of them four due to technicalities), all others have been cleared through the European ports and accepted by the customers.

HLL's Chorwad unit in Gujarat is the largest Surimi (fish paste) producer in Asia, and is approved for exports to all countries, including Japan, the US and the EU.

However, it was among the five seafood export units which were asked to stop production and export by the Export Inspection Agency.

HLL was part of a team that met the officials of the Ministry of Commerce to protest the EIA's directive.

The company said it was ``aggrieved since EIA did not issue any notice to us to present our case''.
