Sanak Misra joins SAIL board

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, Sept. 21

DR Sanak Misra, the Chief Executive of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has joined the board of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). This follows his appointment as Managing Director of RSP on August 23.

A RSP release said that Dr Misra, who had taken charge of RSP on May 21, 2001, was appointed the acting Managing Director in March 2002.

Dr Misra's sole mandate was to turnaround the ailing steel plant, which is the country's first integrated steel plant in the public sector. He began by initiating a massive human resource intervention exercise which comprised multidimensional workshops which he steered himself to reach out to all categories of people telling them about the plant's plight and seeking their opinion on what could be done to revive it.

Results started showing and the plant achieved a 4.6 per growth in production and an eight per cent growth in despatches in 2001-02 compared to 2000-01. These were billed as the highest growth rate figures for any steel plant in the SAIL family.

During this period RSP's products sold the highest in a glut-ridden market.
