Calcutta HC admits plea on jute order

Our Legal Correspondent

KOLKATA, Sept. 21

A Division Bench of Calcutta High Court, comprising Justice Mr S. Banerjea and Justice Mr P.N. Sinha, has admitted an appeal filed by the West Bengal Government challenging the decision of the Centre on jute bag packaging.

In its appeal, the State Government said since most of the jute factories were situated in West Bengal, the order of the Union Government reducing the reservation of jute bag packaging in sugar and foodgrains would adversely affect the industry.

The Centre has issued a notice directing that jute bags be used for packaging 80 per cent of foodgrains and 75 per cent of sugar in the country. The Indian Jute Mill Association challenged this but a single judge of the court upheld the Centre's decision. The State Government and IJMA have now preferred to go in appeal.
