Fishing harbour at Machilipatnam to be ready soon

VIJAYAWADA, Sept. 20

THE fishing harbour under construction at Machilipatnam port at a cost of Rs 6.2 crore will be completed and made operational by the end of the year, according to Mr N. Narasimha Rao, Fisheries Minister.

He was speaking at a function after inaugurating the trawler of Star Seafoods (Vijayawada).Mr Rao said that the Machilipatnam port had witnessed a decline over the years due to historical reasons and fishing activity had suffered a setback.

However, the State Government was keen on reviving the activity at the port and bring in private participation.

He added that 17 more jetties would be erected on the coast in the State for the benefit of the fishermen, each at a cost of Rs 1 crore. Tuna fishing would also get a big boost.

Mr Mohammad Ismail of Star Seafoods said that the company would make use of the limited facilities at the port and export shrimp to the Gulf and other countries.
