Johnson & Johnson launches new hospital disinfectant

CHENNAI, Sept. 20

JOHNSON & Johnson India has launched a new product for terminal disinfection and fumigation of operation theatres in hospitals that do not have advanced filtration techniques in their airconditioning systems.

Speaking to media persons here, Mr Sanjay Mehrotra, Business Development Manager, Johnson & Johnson India, said that the product, Ecoshield, is a solution based on stabilised hydrogen peroxide with silver nitrate. It has been seen to be effective against bacteria, virus, fungi, protozoa, mycobacteria, bacteriophages and biofilms.

The product, according to him, works best with an ultra low volume fogger that releases droplets of seven to 20 microns. It traps suspended particulate matters and kills the microorganisms.

The company will be suggesting names of fogger systems that are at present imported. The equipment is expected to cost around Rs 30,000.

According to him, fogging Ecoshield will be a cost-effective option that could be used by hospitals that do not have sophisticated filtering systems like the high efficiency particulate air filter or laminar filter.

Ecoshield concentrate, he said, will be priced at Rs 450 per litre for hospitals. There is an estimated market of around Rs 10 crore in the country for which the product can compete.

Dr V. Ramasubramanian, Assistant Professor at Sri Ramachandra Hospital, said that Ecoshield would help disinfect operations theatres within two hours. This can ensure a quicker turnaround time. The solution can help in reducing hospital acquired infections.

At present hospitals use formaldehyde, which can take up to 24 hours to disinfect.

He said that the solution was also safer compared to formaldehyde, which is known to irritate eyes and skin and has carcinogenic and mutagenic effects.
