Madurai farmers face water crunch

Our Correspondent

MADURAI, Sept. 19

THE farmers of Madurai district are likely to forgo cultivation yet again, as the combined water storage in the Vaigai-Periayar irrigation system is still at low level.

According to PWD sources, water from Vaigai dam could not be released for irrigation until the combined storage level reached a minimum of 4,000 mcft. The present storage level is at 1,871 mcft. As a result, paddy cultivation in 1.30 lakh acres will be totally hit. The officials mentioned that the farmers have already lost the first crop in the double crop area of 45,041 acres.
