Call to `ignore' report on farm subsidy

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE, Sept. 19

THE National Farmers' Protection Committee (NFPC) at Palakkad has given a call to the farming community to `ignore' the Montek Singh Ahluwalia committee's report to the Tenth Planning Commission on the agricultural sector, recommending withdrawal of subsidies on fertilisers, power, water and other inputs.

Alleging that the suggestions were bizarre, the Chairman of NFPC, Mr K. Ravikumar, pointed out that any production system without due presence and involvement of the stakeholders would become socially irrelevant.

He argued that the Government, instead of folding back the subsidies, could come out with a rational subsidy regime for fertiliser, evolve a system for proper use of water with a regulatory mechanism for monitoring its use instead of charging for water.

According to him, an accurate documentation of the resources available would give an exact idea of the requirement and possibilities.

He stressed the need for evolving an appropriate model to suit the needs of the domestic farming systemrather than embracing the agri-business model suggested by the Ahluwalia Committee.
