Marginal rise in coir exports

Our Bureau

KOCHI, Sept. 19

COIR exports during the first five months of the current fiscal has increased marginally, both in terms of quantity and value compared to that of the corresponding period last fiscal.

A total quantity of 32,776 tonnes valued at Rs 141.96 crore were exported as against 27.861 tonnes worth Rs 124.61 crore in April-August 2001.

The items which have shown improvement during the period are coir mats, rugs and carpets and coir pith, while the major items which witnessed decline were coir yarn and coir mattings.

The increase in coir mats, a senior official of the Coir Board told Business Line, could be attributed to the fact that there was no effective substitute to this product.

However, there had been a continuous decline in the export of coir yarn.

The main reason for it was decline in the manufacturing activities in the developed countries because of the high cost of production.

This had led to increased import of finished products such as coir doormats that is in greater demand, he said.

At the same time, the demand for coir mattings was on the decline because of the entry of other similar products made of synthetic and other natural fibres, he said.
