Balco firms up investment for Korba expansion

KOLKATA, Sept. 18

THE management of Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco), a subsidiary of the Sterlite group, has firmed up an investment plan for massive expansion at its integrated aluminium plant at Korba in Chhattisgarh.

According to a Balco source, the company is expected to invest about Rs 6,000 crore towards expansion of its captive power plant, alumina refinery and smelter.

It is explained that the power plant's capacity will be increased from 270 MW to 810 MW, thereby facilitating the drawal of the entire requirement of power for its alumina refinery, the capacity of which is to be increased from 1,80,00 tonnes to 3,30,00 tonnes per annum and also the smelter whose capacity is to be increased from 1,00,000 tonnes to 2,30,000 tonnes per annum. This apart, a new alumina refinery with an annual capacity of 5,00,000 tonnes will be set up.
