New cattle feed supplement plant in Gujarat

CHENNAI, Sept. 18

A NEW cattle feed supplement plant has been set up at Itola, near Vadodara in Gujarat under a three-year joint research project by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Set up under the guidance of CSIRO and NDDB scientists, the bypass protein plant processes the protein meal produced as a byproduct from oil extraction of sunflower, rapeseed and other oilseeds. The resulting supplement provides cattle with protein source that add value to the nutritional quality of the diet, said an Australian embassy release.

According to the CSIRO Scientist, Dr Suresh Gulati, the research team found that milk yields increased substantially when cows were fed the supplement.

NDDB's Senior Scientist, Dr Manget Ram Garg, said the milk yield had gone up about one litre per cow or buffalo per day, providing producers with additional income of around Rs 9 a day, per animal. Over the next six months, NDDB will conduct feeding trials to determine whether installing similar plants in some of its network of 45 feed mills would be viable.
