NEW DELHI, Sept. 17 EXPORT of foodgrains from the Food Corporation of India's (FCI) stocks are set to soon cross 15 million tonne mark, since the drive to allow such shipments at highly subsidised rates began in November 2000. According to an official release issued here on Tuesday, the FCI had, as on September 13, received payments from exporters for 151.86 lakh tonnes (l.t) of foodgrains, comprising 84.20 l.t of wheat and 67.66 l.t of rice. Further, a total quantity of 134.88 l.t - 82.11 l.t of wheat and 52.77 l.t of rice - has so far been actually lifted by exporters. In the process, the country has emerged as the world's second largest exporter of rice and the sixth largest exporter of wheat. During the current year, India is expected to even overtake Thailand as the leading rice shipper, the release said, adding that so far foreign exchange worth over Rs 6,656 crore has been earned through export of foodgrains from the central pool. The release has quoted the Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution as stating that there has been a spurt in foodgrain exports in recent months and exporters have, since July 2002 alone, deposited money with FCI for lifting 24 l.t of rice and 15 l.t of wheat. As on August 1, 2002, the total foodgrain stocks in the central pool amounted to 201.25 l.t of rice and 396.58 l.t of wheat. All quantitative restrictions of export of rice, wheat and wheat products have been lifted, subject to the condition that stocks in the central pool would not go below 243 l.t (143 l.t wheat and 100 l.t rice). Importers of Indian wheat mainly include South-East Asia (Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam and Myanmar), West Asia (Kuwait, Qatar, UAE and Yemen) and Africa (Sudan and Egypt), besides neighbouring countries such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Rice exports are being undertaken to over 33 countries, including Africa (Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, South Africa, Ivory Coast and Mozambique), West Asia and East Asia.
