Indo Rama to focus on specialty fibres

COIMBATORE, Sept.16

INDO Rama Synthetics (India) Ltd (IRSL), which is doubling its polyester stable fibre (PSF) production capacity at its Butibori plant, is focussing on supply and marketing of speciality fibres, especially for the sewing thread application to take advantage of the emerging newer applications both in apparel and industrial textiles.

With the demand for sewing thread expected to grow at 10 per cent, Indo Rama is gearing up to establish a market for its `semi-dull' PS fibre for sewing thread application, which, the company officials claim, is cost competitive and meets the quality stringency expected for sewing thread spinning in terms of fibre tenacity and elongation standards.

"We have developed the `semi-dull' PSF of 1.1 denier as specialty fibre for sewing thread application through fibre-engineering which has caught the imagination of the sewing thread market," said Mr Amit Saraogi, Manager, PSF marketing from IRSL's New Delhi office who was here recently to participate in a meet on `Polyester Sewing Threads' organised by the Textile Association of India here.

According to Mr Saraogi, the demand for PSF for sewing thread application in the country is estimated at 3,000 tonnes per month which is growing at 10 per cent and with increased emphasis is being laid on usage of polyester sewing thread in place of cotton sewing thread both in apparel and non-apparel sectors, the shift to polyester based sewing thread would precipitate in the coming months.

Indo-Rama is currently producing 100 tonnes per month of specialty fibre for sewing thread needs and this capacity could be increased depending on demand.

In the past six months of market-promotion carried out for the 1.1 denier specialty fibre, IRSL could dispel the doubts on the applicability of the `semi-dull' fibre for sewing thread application as all along the perception in the market was that only `bright' fibre could be used for making sewing thread.

The `semi-dull' PSF from IRSL is also cheaper by Rs 2/3 per kg compared to the fibres offered by its competitors in the market and IRSL going by the demand indications might step up its specialty fibre production for the sewing thread, said Mr J.V.V. Murthy, Regional Manager, IRSL, Coimbatore.
