Coir Board offers help to Mozambique

Our Bureau

KOCHI, Sept. 16

THE Coir Board is to assist the Republic of Mozambique in developing coir industry in the African nation and a decision to this effect has emanated from a discussion the High Commissioner of Mozambique had with the Coir Board Chairman, Mr Christy Fernandez.

Mozambique has sought the help of the board for developing coir industry with mutual cooperation between the two countries, Mr Christy Fernandez said.

The proposal has come on the basis of a study recently undertaken by the board in that country on their request.

Following the discussion by Mr Agostinho de Rosario, Mozambique High Commissioner, with the Coir Board Chairman here on September 12, on the possibilities of setting up coir producing units there, the board has agreed to provide the services of technical experts to set up coir manufacturing units, for skill development and capacity building, Mr Fernandez said.

He said an action plan and development strategy would be drawn up by the board for implementing the developmental activities in Mozambique.

The project would be implemented through funding support from international agencies, he said.

Of late, he said, a number of coconut growing countries had started showing interest to start coir industries exploiting the locally available raw material.

``These countries have been looking to India for providing necessary technical know-how through international cooperation''.
