Agriculture Area under crops declines in AP Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, Sept. 15 THERE is a 31 per cent decline in area under crops in Andhra Pradesh during the current kharif season due to prevailing drought conditions in the State. The area covered by crops so far is estimated to be 56.78 lakh hectares as against a normal of 81.8 lakh ha during the season. According to official estimates, the area under paddy has declined by 50 per cent. Paddy has been sown in only 13.6 lakh ha as against a normal of 26.95 lakh ha. On the whole, the area under foodgrains has declined by 36 per cent. In the case of other crops, including oils seeds, the decline is to the extent of 31 per cent. The area under groundnut, a major oilseed crop in the State, has declined by 36 per cent from a normal of Rs 15.42 lakh ha to 11.6 lakh ha. Even in the area sown, it was estimated that the yield loss would be 75 per cent in an extent of 9.84 lakh ha 37.5 per cent in an extent of 31.14 per cent. The loss for the farming community in the State on account of the prolonged dry spell is estimated to be Rs 3,883 crore. The State Government has sought a Central assistance of Rs 1210.90 crore in the form of cash and 25 lakh tonnes of rice free of cost for continuing the food-for-work programme till the next kharif season. The water levels in all the major reservoirs in State, except those under the Godavari river basin, are very low. At Nagarjunasagar, the water level is 512.70 ft as against a full reservoir level (FRL) of 590 ft. At Srisailam, the water level is at 816.12 as against a FRL of 885 ft.
