`Govt committed to meeting power demand'

NEW DELHI, Sept. 8

THE Union Minister for Power, Mr Anant G. Geete, has said that the Government is committed to meeting the country's demand for power in the "very near future".

After inaugurating the international lighting exhibition - - Lii 2002 - - here, he said that the need of the hour was to ensure significant increase in light output using modern energy-efficient light sources in view of the power shortage in the country.

Congratulating the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers for showcasing the best of the technology in the world and promoting awareness about energy conservation, the Minister of State for Power, Ms Jayawantiben Mehta, announced that the Government would make it mandatory for all its institutions to use energy efficient lamps.
