Foodgrains Central rice stocks dip to 201 lakh t Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Sept. 3 RICE stocks in the Central pool have fallen to 201.25 lakh tonnes (lt) as on August 1 this year as against 222.04 lt on August 1, 2001. Since April 1, when stocks stood at 249.12 lt, rice stocks in the Central pool have come down by nearly 50 lt. The depletion in stocks has been mainly due to higher offtake during the current fiscal. Total offtake of rice from the Central pool, which amounted to only 33.01 lt during April-July 2001, climbed to 83.85 lt during the first fourth months of the current fiscal. The higher offtake, in turn, was largely on account of exports, with a total quantity of 28.07 lt being offloaded to exporters during April-July 2002. On the other hand, there has been a marginal increase in wheat stocks from 387.15 lt on August 1, 2001 to 396.58 lt as on August 1, 2002. Inclusive of rice and coarse grains, total foodgrain stocks in the central pool as on August 1, 2002 stood at 598.45 lt, compared to 610.08 lt as on August 1, 2001. Total offtake of wheat during April-July 2002, at 49.48 lt, was higher than the 34.70 lt figure for the corresponding period of 2001. Offtake by exporters during the first four months of the current fiscal amounted to 13.83 lt. If current trends hold, total exports of rice from the Central pool is likely to touch around 80 lt, with wheat exports amounting to another 40 lt.
