Plantations Planters told to tap new zones Our Bureau
COONOOR, Sept. 3 THE Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr Rajiv Pratap Rudy, on Tuesday called upon the planters to exploit the potential in hitherto unexplored regions, instead of lamenting about the gloom. Stating that the gloomy days were a thing of the past, Mr Rudy, who was here to inaugurate the 109th Annual Conference of UPASI said all the stakeholders should come together to make the mission a success. While the planters looked forward to the Minister to respond positively to some of the appeals made to the Commerce Ministry, he merely pointed out that the different commodity boards had initiated various programmes as tea factory upgradation scheme, quality upgradation scheme, speciality coffee to build up domestic consumption, term loan etc., to help the planters and asked them to take advantage of these schemes. The Ministry's vision of achieving a one per cent share in world trade by 2006 was not a Herculean task, he said and added that the export growth registered during the first four months of the current fiscal was 18 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the earlier year.
