Central sops to SSIs `disappointing'

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Confederation of Southern States Small Industries Association (CONSSIA) has expressed its disappointment over the sops announced recently for the SSI sector by the Union Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, at the annual SSI convention held recently at New Delhi.

Speaking to Business Line here, Mr A. Selvaraj President, CONSSIA also the President of the Tamilnadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) said the announcement has not adequately fulfilled the aspirations and present day requirement of the SSI sector in the country.

Though Government both at Central and State reiterated their commitment towards SSI Sector, in reality it is not reflected in terms of policy pronouncements. What has been announced as a sop to few sectoral interest like ball and roller industries, bicycle parts and accessories may not be the expectations of the SSI sector in the era of liberalisation and globalisation process.

The Central Government is to be blamed for slow pace in implementing Dr.S.P.Gupta Committee report submitted during February 2001, Mr Selvaraj said.

The impact of globalisation on SSI sector is already causing high rate of sickness all over the country, he added.
