KAU vet colleges risk derecognition

KOCHI, Aug 30

KERALA Agricultural University's veterinary colleges face the risk of derecognition if the deficiencies pointed out by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) are not complied with.

In a letter to the State Chief Secretary, the VCI President, Mr G.S. Chahal, said that the Inspectors of the Council had pointed out "grave deficiencies in terms of teaching staff, infrastructure, hospital and farm facilities''.

A copy of the report was also sent to the KAU with the request that the deficiencies be removed in a time-bound programme. It was further advised to restrict number of admissions to 60 at the College of Veterinary Sciences, Mannuthy, in Thrissur district.

"The University has been time and again impressed upon to take immediate necessary steps to fulfil the deficiencies but it is regretted that instead of restricting admissions to 60, the State has started a new veterinary college at Pookotte with 40 admissions which is functioning in the same campus and utilising the facilities provided at College of Veterinary Science, Mannuthy,'' Mr Chahal said in his letter.

The Pookotte college has been functioning for three years now and the students are being imparted training for 3rd professional B.V.Sc and A.H. courses despite the lack of necessary teaching staff, accommodation, farms and other infrastructure facilities.

"It has come to the notice of the council that though a budget of Rs 8 crore was earmarked for providing infrastructure facilities for Pookotte Veterinary College, the University used hardly Rs 2 crore."

Mr Chahal also warned that under Section 21 of the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984 the Council is empowered to recommend to Central Government withdrawal of recognition of B.V.Sc & A.H. qualification granted by any University not adhering to the norms provided by the Council in Minimum Standard of Veterinary Education Regulations.
