Announcements Emcure, NCL develop new drug Our Bureau
PUNE, Aug. 29 A DRUG for hypertension, Asomex (S-Amlodipine), has been developed by Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in collaboration with the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL). Dr Sivaram, Director, NCL, told presspersons that the benefits offered by S-Amlodipine included lesser dosage to get the same efficacy as the conventional drug and reduced side effects due to reduced dosage. He said scientists at NCL had developed a process for the preparation of S (-) Amlodipine Besilate, which had been commercially scaled up by Emcure. Emcure had conducted a bioequivalence study comprising S-Amlodipine 2.5 mg and Amlodipine 5 mg, which confirmed that the former was bioequivalent to the latter. Dr Sivaram said NCL had exclusive arrangement with Emcure for this product and noted that it had signed agreements with several companies for many such products. Development of about four or five products were on the anvil catering to respiratory, asthma and allergy ailments. Emcure was tackling the Rs 110-crore market which already has players such as Dr. Reddy's and Pfizer. Mr Satish Mehta, Managing Director, Emcure, said the company would be focussing on four aspects during the current fiscal which included brand building, creating top-of-the-line facility at Hinjewadi, increased investment in research and development and biotech products.
