`Youths to be involved in coal & mining sector'

NEW DELHI, Aug. 28

THE Ministry of Coal and Mines will explore possibilities to involve the youths in the overall development of the coal and mining sector, according to the newly appointed Cabinet Minister for Coal and Mines, Ms Uma Bharti.

Assuming the charge of the Ministry on Wednesday, she said that she will look into the problems and challenges being faced by the Ministry and the sector as a whole and will look at opportunities which can make workers' life better.

The Minister expressed concern about the poverty of the people residing in mineral-rich areas. She said that though the people are poor in areas like Bundelkhand, Palamou, Bolangir and Kalahandi, these are some of the richest areas in the country in terms of natural resources.

Expressing her gratitude to the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, for making her the Coal Minister, Ms Bharti said that after her experience in the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, she will endeavour to function in a similar manner in the new ministry so that it yields visible results.

On the issue of privatisation, Ms Bharti said that privatisation shouldn't be misinterpreted as globalisation. "We do not oppose privatisation but we oppose globalisation," the Minister said.
