BANGALORE: Karnataka aims to empower 1.4 million eligible farmers with Kisan cards by March 2004, the Cooperation Minister, Mr H. Vishwanath, has said.

Talking to newspersons here, he said the maximum credit limit of the card had been enhanced to Rs one lakh and already over 700,000 farmers have been provided with these cards.

Stating that the Government was keen to encourage cooperative movement among the people in rural and urban areas, he said the cooperatives had been told that every year 20 per cent of the loans should be given to new members.

The cooperative movement, handling transactions worth Rs 20,000 crore in the State annually, should ensure that the benefits reached the deserved, he opined.

Misappropriation cases amounted to only Rs 45 crore and efforts were on to plug it, he said.
