Exports & Imports CII meet to help boost exports of SMEs Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Aug. 13 TO help small and medium enterprises tap the export market, a move that will also help them beat the recession in the domestic market, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - Southern Region, is organising a two-day conclave that will discuss various topics related to exports. The intention in organising the event is to take the message of exports to the small and medium scale industries, according to Mr T.T. Ashok, Chairman, SME sub-committee, CII-SR. The seminar will be held on August 27 and 28 here. He told reporters here today that the SSIs made more than 8,000 products in various categories. And, with the market access initiative announced by the Government, it would be possible to look at the import baskets of different countries. Mr Ashok said the SMEs contributed about 50 per cent of the country's total exports. However, India's share of world export trade was only 0.85 per cent. With the Government's stated intention to raise this figure to one per cent in the next five years, a proactive approach was needed to achieve the target. The objective of the seminar, he said, was to lead the competitive and vibrant small and medium enterprises to identify sector-wise strategies for the export market. The topics to be covered included global market penetration strategy for the existing products; product diversification strategy for the existing markets, identifying new markets and accessing global markets, creating awareness on the latest changes in the export policies; impact of WTO on exports; managing political, financial and exchange risks while exporting; understanding international pricing decisions; and, maintaining international packaging and quality standards.
