Roots Ind lining up slew of launches for auto sector

R. Y. Narayanan

COIMBATORE, Aug. 8

ROOTS Industries Ltd (RIL) Coimbatore, a major manufacturer of automotive electric horns, is launching a slew of automotive accessories, some of which are in technical collaboration with manufacturers abroad.

First off the block will be `Roots parking guide system' which is an `ultrasonic reverse sensor' manufactured in technical collaboration with IS Corporation of South Korea, a well-known military equipment supplier.

According to Mr K. Ramaswamy, Chairman, Roots group, this product would be, in the beginning, imported as CKD kits and assembled at the Roots factory. In a phased manner, the product would be indigenised to suit the domestic market requirements. The product is being test-marked, and in the next two or three months, it would be available across the country.

The ultrasonic parking system is a non-contact obstacle distance measuring and indicating system that guides the vehicle user to park the vehicle without a hitch and to gauge the exact distance of the obstacle so as to facilitate safe reverse manoeuvring.

(Using ultrasonic sensors, the device establishes a sensing zone in front of it and any object in the zone is sensed by it and the user is alerted by a beeping sound. Besides, a LED indicates the direction of the object and as an option, users could have the exact distance of the object displayed).

Mr N.V. Krishnan, Director, Marketing, RIL, said the company would initially come out with three models of the ultrasonic sensor aimed at the four wheeler/MUV/LCV segments.

While the two sensor model of surface mount type would be priced around Rs 4,000, the threaded (built-in) type two sensor model would be priced around Rs 5,000. There is also an economy threaded (built-in) type three sensor model that would be competitively priced around Rs 3,500. This would have no display unit.

Also on the pipeline is a threaded type four sensor model for trucks. A snap type sensor model is also being developed.

Mr Ramaswamy said the company is also planning to launch more automotive products such as time-light, car guard system and braking products for the two-wheeler and four-wheeler segments.

While some of these products would be developed indigenously, technical knowhow may be sought for others. The company is also lining up products such as veg-cutler and new models of industrial cleaning equipment.
