New policy to scrap coal sale linkages

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Aug. 8

THE proposed new policy for sale of coal to non-core sector to be adopted by the coal producing subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd (CIL) does away with the existing system of linkages and sponsorships and all future supplies will be on the basis of bilateral fuel supply agreements.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Law & Justice, Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad, in the Lok Sabha.

The existing valid linked customers will be offered coal under the new system in the first place and certain quantities will be made available to seasonal customers like brick kilns.

However, Mr Prasad pointed out that coal supply to non-core sector would have to be made in a manner that did not affect supply to the core sectorand additional availability, if any after meeting the requirements of the earlier linked customers in non-core sector, will be offered to intending buyers separately.
