NEW DELHI, Aug. 7

THE Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned Rs 3,065 lakh to Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal for providing drinking water to the rural areas under the Centrally-sponsored Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) of Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission (RGNDWM) for the year 2002-03, according to a press release.

While Uttar Pradesh has received Rs 2,530 lakh for this purpose, Uttaranchal has received Rs 535 lakh. The funds are meant to be utilised for the execution and completion of schemes to provide safe drinking water facilities to rural habitations and schools.

"Priority is to be accorded to cover partially covered and water quality affected habitations of these States. The States should meet targets out of the funds released under ARWSP along with their matching grants," said the release.

Uttar Pradesh has to cover 3,811 schools as per the targets for the year 2002-03. However, with the present release, the State has received Rs 6,511 lakh against the provisional allocation of Rs 13,022 lakh, as first instalment for the year.
