Policy Industry & Economy - Economic Offences Opposition Leader to have say in appointment of CVC Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Aug. 7 THE Union Cabinet on Tuesday passed a resolution, which will pave the way for the appointment of a new Central Vigilance Commissioner to succeed Mr N. Vittal whose term ends on September 2. The resolution was required as the Ordinance for appointing the CVC and vigilance commissioners had expired in December last. The procedures for appointment of the CVC were formalised in accordance with those specified by the Supreme Court. As per the resolution by the Union Cabinet, the CVC and its members will be appointed by a three-member team headed by the Prime Minister. The other members will be the Home Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. In the absence of a leader of the Opposition, the leader of the single largest party will be a member of the selection panel. The names will be recommended by the Cabinet Secretary. The CVC will have a tenure of 4 years and its members will have a three-year tenure or 65 years whichever is earlier. The Union Cabinet also approved amendments to both the Freedom of Information Bill and the Representation of the People Act. The Government hopes to table amendments to the Freedom of Information Bill in the ongoing session of Parliament.
