Foreign Trade Trade deficit with China at Rs 5,290 cr K.R. Srivats
NEW DELHI, Aug. 7 CHINA continued to have a favourable trade balance with India in rupee terms in 2001-02, a trend that has been maintained over the last eight years. According to the data collated by the Directorate-General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics (DGCIS), India's imports from China in rupee terms during 2001-02 stood at Rs 9,689.70 crore. Exports to China during the same period stood at Rs 4,400.03 crore, resulting in a trade deficit of Rs 5,289.67 crore. Trade deficit in rupee terms during 2001-02 was 72.44 per cent higher than that of Rs 3,032.55 crore recorded during 2000-01. Imports from China during 2000-01 stood at Rs 6,818.34 crore. Exports to China during the same period stood at Rs 3,785.79. The major export items to China are iron ore, marine products, cotton yarn, fabrics and made-ups articles, oil meals, ferrous ores, chrome ores, drugs and pharmaceuticals, inorganic chemicals, processed minerals, unmanufactured tobacco, electronic goods, textile garments, leather items and drug intermediates. Similarly, the major items of imports from China are organic and inorganic chemicals, electronic goods, coking coal, coke and briquettes, medical and pharmaceutical products, textile yarn, fabrics and made-up articles, raw and silk yarn, mineral ores, iron and steel, non-ferrous metal, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones.
