Vizag port gets ISO 14001

Amit Mitra

VISAKHAPATNAM, Aug. 7

VIZAG port has set a new trend in the Indian port sector after it became the first in South-East Asia to receive the ISO 14001 certification for the entire gamut of port operations.

The port, which received the certification a few days ago, won the recognition through the implementation of a comprehensive environmental management programme.

The port had declared its environmental policy in February 2001, which involved a multi-pronged strategy to control dust and water pollution, effective monitoring and efforts to conserve resources such as water, power and fuel.

A significant feature of the environmental management programme was the initiative to conserve water, power and fuel resources. ``The environmental management programme had led to the restructuring and reorganisation of the inventory management system, apart from elimination of infructuous expenditure and reduction in repairs/maintenance expenditure,'' the official said.
