Kerala trade unions to strike work today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Aug 5
THE Joint Council of Trade Unions in Kerala has called for a State-wide 24-hour strike from midnight on Monday in protest against what it called as the anti-labour policies of the Central and State Governments.
Unions owing allegiance to the Left parties and the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) are participating in the strike, according to a spokesman.
Employees' and teachers' organisations have also extended support to the agitation.
While transport unions are expected to join in, essential services such as hospitals, media, milk and water supply have been exempted from the purview of the strike, the Joint Council said.
Faced with the prospect of yet another general strike, not too long after the month-old campaign that paralysed the administration in February-March this year, the State Government has made it clear that dies non would be slapped on those employees who make themselves unavailable for work on Tuesday.
In a joint statement, the 13 trade unions urged the workforce to support the strike called to resist the "harmful'' policies of the Government at the Centre and the State.
