CHENNAI, Aug. 4

THE Tamil Nadu Government has sought Rs 720 crore assistance from the National Calamity Contingency Fund for drought relief. This is in addition to the funds provided under the Calamity Relief Fund for 2002-03.

Besides, the Government has also asked for two lakh tonnes of additional food grains free of cost from the Centre.

According to a State Government press release, so far 19 districts have received either deficient or scanty rainfall this year. The combined storage position in the reservoir stands at 12.42 per cent of the full capacity; more than 95 per cent of the tanks and ponds have also dried up. During 2001, 16 districts received deficient or scanty rainfall.

If the current dry spell continues, the release says, it is expected that there will be a shortfall in the coverage of various crops to the extent of 7.55 lakh hectares as against the normal coverage of 27.89 lakh hectares and the cultivated crop will also be affected. The production loss is estimated to be around Rs 1,332 crore and the loss of employment in terms of man-days will be around 13.28 crore. The release said that a detailed memorandum incorporating these details had been sent to the Centre.
