The Hindu Business Line : N-E truck movement hit by bad roads

The bad road condition in the Barak Valley in the North-East has hit hard the movement of trucks and trailers in the region. The problem has been compounded by the recent landslide. The landslide at Sonapur in Meghalaya not only killed four persons but also virtually stalled all road movement between Silchar and Guwahati. It took Border Road Task Force nearly three weeks to clear the debris and throw the road open to traffic again. Yet the present situation cannot be described as ideal. As soon as the rain starts, the traffic movement comes to halt, forcing BRTF to swing into action again. In the process, the original road has virtually disappeared.

The condition of the 40-km long Karimgunge (Assam)-Dharamnagar (Tripura) road beggars description. It is particularly bad at a place called Patharkandi. It takes two to three days to cross the distance. Recently local MLAs/MPs took up the matter with the Director General Border Roads. But nothing has happened as yet, presumably because the work will be taken up after the monsoon. The 180-km long Silchar (Assam)-Aizawal (Mizoram) road and the 40-km long Silchar-Vairangty (Mizoram border) road too are badly in need of repair.
