Study seeks review of food laws

MUMBAI, Aug. 2

RATIONALISATION of food laws, review of Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Acts, support to contract farming and involvement of private sector in providing agricultural extension services are some of the recommendations suggested through a study done by the Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI).

The document titled `Creating wealth from farmgate to food plate' also recommends that agricultural economic zones (AEZs) and food parks should be set up to encourage processing industry.

According to the study, a higher price may be paid to farmers even while lowering the end consumer price if the same can be offset by the cost-saving achieved through efficiency in the supply chain. ``Cost saving will come through an integrated look at inputs, credit, agro-practices and price realisation,'' the study said.

One of the drivers of change is an increase in consumer demand that can be achieved by improving affordability, quality and variety. The study emphasises on the need for a change in attitude from marketing what is produced to producing what the market will pay for.
