Pawan Hans inks pacts; poised to go global

NEW DELHI, Aug. 2

PAWAN Hans Helicopters Ltd, the state-owned chopper company, is all set to go global, having inked pacts with two helicopter companies in Canada and South Africa for its worldwide services.

This apart, the enterprise has also been selected as an authorised maintenance centre by Eurocopter, the European helicopter firm, to provide services on `Dauphin' choppers in 10 countries, Mr Nagar V. Sridhar, Chairman and Managing Director, Pawan Hans, told presspersons here.

Elaborating on the tie-up with the Canadian company, Mr Sridhar said: "We have signed a memorandum of understanding with CHC Helicopter International of Canada. Under this, CHC would offer contracts to us for operating our helicopters all over the world. Besides, it would also give assistance for upgrading our operations to world-class standards".

The other agreement, Mr Sridhar said, has been signed with Titan Aviation of South Africa to commence helicopter services in Africa. However, there is no final word on the financial gains that are likely to accrue from the tie-ups with the two foreign entities as these details are yet to be ascertained.

As for the deal with Eurocopter, Mr Sridhar said that the name of Pawan Hans would now be incorporated in the European firm's global network of authorised maintenance centres. This, he said, would help Pawan Hans in undertaking services for South-East Asian countries such as Indonesia, Taiwan, Cambodia and Sri Lanka, besides India. The added benefit would be the upgradation of its workshop maintenance facilities.

The Pawan Hans chief disclosed that the company was also purchasing two new Dauphin choppers (SA 365N3) from Eurocopter. While the first chopper is to be delivered in September, the second is to follow in November.
